Another gun-free, psycho-enabling zone murder spree

When will we ever learn? Another psychopath uses a gun-free zone for his cowardly murder spree. This incident occurred in a Cinemark theater, whose owning chain typically posts their properties as gun-free, psychopath-enabling  zones and ejects those who miss the signs. The town of Aurora, Colorado, already has strict gun control laws. As a result, the law-abiding movie-goers were sitting ducks, unable to oppose a psychopath who could not care less about your signs. We’ve seen this too many times. People need to take responsibility for their own personal safety and that of their families.

Had even one patron in that theater been armed, either a lawful concealed carrier or off-duty police officer, the outcome could have been far different. Don’t be spoofed by the media hype. Even intelligent law enforcement professionals agree. Yet, Bloomberg and Lautenberg, the patron saints of the anti-civil rights gun grabbers, are already dancing in the blood of the victims. Feinstein did the same today on Fox News. These morons won’t be happy until the whole country becomes a psychopath-enabling, victim disarmament zone. Gun control has failed miserably anywhere it’s ever been enacted, e.g., England, Australia, CanadaMexico, Brazil, and Russia. All gun control has ever done is provide helpless victims for dictators and predatory criminals a free reign.

This perp had been planning his murders for months, acquiring even explosives for booby traps for his perverted plot. Remember that Timothy McVeigh killed 168 and injured over 800 without the benefit of a firearm. The 9/11 Islamic terrorists killed 2,996 without the benefit of firearms. Shall we outlaw fertilizer and airliners? I guess that we won’t discuss deaths in cars and swimming pools.

Much as been made of the psycho’s body armor and AR-15 rifle. Let’s take a quick look at those myths.

Body armor isn’t like tank armor. The most effective that civilians can obtain is at most Level IIIA, but at the prices listed in the new reports, the perp in the Century Aurora Cinema 16 probably only had Level II armor. It will stop most common pistol ammunition with its soft armor, but not like hard plates. The vest would deform almost 2 inches (max 44 mm per NIJ standards) on each shot that struck it in a fresh area. Think about that a second. While the round may not penetrate the vest on the first few shots, it will probably break a rib or two or three unless one has mongo padding behind the vest – unlikely in the summer. Anyone who has ever been shot in a vest will tell you that it hurts…a lot. Most times those hit multiple times will fall down and be incapacitated at least momentarily from the shock and pain of the impacts. The Joker-wannabe would have folded like a six-high hand if shot by an armed citizen. Four or five rounds to the psycho’s center of mass, or one in the face will certainly end the situation. Body armor is not a magical talisman for perps.

For the umpteenth time, an AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon. An AR-15 is a civilian sport rifle. An assault weapon, according to the official Army definition, is a “short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges” (FSTC-CW-07-03-70, November 1970). “Selective-fire” is military parlance for automatic fire. That means one pull and hold on the trigger will fire the carbine until the ammunition in the magazine is expended. An AR-15 is semi-automatic, meaning it takes a separate trigger pull to fire successive rounds. Big difference. Learn it and get it right.

All the hype about the psycho using military hardware, weapons of war, etc., is pure FUD. He used common civilian sporting firearms in the theater (indeed, the most common in the case of the AR-15 and Remington 870 shotgun), but the hand-made grenades, booby-trap explosives, etc., in his apartment were definitely not legal. The bottom line is that even a single armed good guy/gal in the Century Aurora Cinema 16 Theater could have stopped the attack with far less loss of life. The situation should have gone more like this:

Take responsibility for yourself and your loved ones. Buy firearms, get trained, get a permit to carry, and don’t leave home without the means to stop predatory criminals and psychos. Don’t be a voluntary victim. As the line from Firefly goes, “Don’t stand for that. Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill ‘em right back.”

As we saw again a few days ago in the Aurora Cinema 16 Theater in Colorado, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
